TG703341 - Surgo Curator, International Art, South Asia

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

Through its exhibition and displays programme and the work undertaken by its collection, Tate continues to develop its ambitions in relation to modern and contemporary art from South Asia.

Working closely within a team of curators at Tate Modern, whose focus is similarly orientated across the international regions, this exciting position aims to support our ambitions in the collecting field and curatorial initiatives that advance our understating of art from the region to include the UK diaspora.

The outcomes of the work undertaken in this area would then be applied to our exhibition and displays programme, as well as our acquisitions and collecting strategy. To that end, there are dynamic connections to be forged between research undertaken by the Hyundai Tate Research Center: Transnational, which you would be a key contributor and curators across Tate, as well as the wider South Asia art ecology.

A key aspect of the role will be to lead our South Asia Acquisition Committee (SAAC) and to maintain good relations with its members as well as to engage artists, galleries, international curators, and related institutions.

You will draw upon expertise to research and propose acquisitions of modern and contemporary art from South Asia for the Tate Collection, negotiating terms and contracts with venders, following internal acquisition procedures, ensure proper liaison and communication within Tate during the acquisition process.

You will Provide leadership in the day-to-day management of exhibitions and project teams according to Tate’s project planning processes to ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery of projects. Across all these initiatives, the designated curator would work in alignment with Tate’s priorities in relation to audiences, our environmental impact, and staff values.

You will be an experienced curator with an expert knowledge of modern and contemporary art with a particular focus from South Asian region and its diasporas. You will have a track record of devising and delivering exhibitions or projects with imagination and distinction, possess well-developed interpersonal skills, with the capacity to lead, yet flexible enough to work well within a team, and work collaboratively across Tate and beyond.
