Job Introduction
Through its exhibitions, displays, and collection activity, Tate continues to strengthen its commitment to modern and contemporary art from South Asia and its diasporas. Working closely with a team of curators at Tate Modern—whose work spans a wide range of international contexts—this exciting role supports our ambitions in both collecting and curatorial practice, deepening our understanding of art from the region and its connections within the UK.
The insights and outcomes of this research will inform our exhibitions and displays as well as our acquisitions and collecting strategy. Central to this role will be fostering dynamic collaborations with the Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational, curators across Tate, and the wider South Asian art ecology. A key responsibility will be leading Tate’s South Asia Acquisitions Committee (SAAC), maintaining strong relationships with its supporters, and engaging with artists, galleries, international curators, and peer institutions.
You will draw upon your expertise to research and propose acquisitions of modern and contemporary art from South Asia, negotiating terms with vendors and ensuring clear communication and adherence to Tate’s internal acquisition procedures. You will also provide leadership in the day-to-day management of exhibitions, displays, and project teams, ensuring the efficient and cost-effective delivery of high-quality curatorial projects. Across all areas of work, you will operate in alignment with Tate’s priorities relating to audiences, environmental impact, and staff values.
You will be an experienced curator with expert knowledge of modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on South Asia and its diasporas. You will bring a proven track record of devising and delivering imaginative and rigorous exhibitions or projects, impeccable writing and presentation skills, and a collaborative, inclusive approach to working across teams. Your established networks in the South Asian art field, alongside excellent organisational skills and the ability to engage diverse audiences, will enable you to contribute meaningfully to Tate’s ambitions in this area.
